“The Lost Cities” by Shannon Messenger

I'm sure all of you know the Harry Potter books, and many are also familiar with Percy Jackson. But have you heard of Sophie Foster? If not, you really have something to regret.

The Lost Cities book series by Shannon Messenger tells the story of a twelve-year-old girl named Sophie who has an unusual gift - she can hear other people's thoughts. She is also very intelligent and doesn’t really get on well with the other kids at school. One day she meets a mysterious boy named Fitz and learns where her extraordinary abilities come from - she is an elf and has been hidden in the world of humans, while her true home is the Lost Cities. In the blink of an eye, she must leave behind everything she has known up to this point - including her family - and learn the rules of her new world.

In the Lost Cities she finds out that even among elves she is quite extraordinary and not everyone is happy that she has been found and brought back. There are also important secrets buried deep in her memory which are crucial for saving her new world.

The elves in Shannon Messenger's books don't live in trees or medieval castles. They learn in a school that resembles modern Hogwarts and have technology and a range of skills equal to the X-Men. They are vegans. They travel with the light. And Sophie's new parents have a sanctuary for animals that Newt Skamander himself would be proud of.

Although the main character of this series is a girl, these are not books for young female readers only. All volumes are full of magic, dangerous situations, fighting enemies and sudden twists of action. But important topics such as adoption, peer reluctance and responsibility are also touched upon, because the more someone knows and can do, the greater the burden they carry.

Lost Cities is a series that currently has eight volumes plus a bonus volume, of which only the first four have been translated into Polish. It is a story in which we watch the characters gradually grow up and the problems they have to face become more and more difficult, although they are not easy from the beginning.

I'm sure you will enjoy the books and even those of you who haven't dared to read in English so far will get so engrossed in reading that they won't want to wait for the Polish translation and will reach for the next adventures in the original language.
